I have heard people mention wanting to add sumps, have sumps, etc
why?
if you are using a DSB and therefore have removed all mechanical filtration why would you want that?
To hide your hang on equipment?

I use a sump to put my heater in, attach my protien skimmer to, add suppliments in, and increase the water volume of my tank. You don't need one, but alot of people use them.

Often people make a combo sump/refugium. Option720's response about refugiums in the Fish section (Refugiums- ?????...) was great if you want to learn about that.

I just payed a friend to build me a custom sump and skimmer. This guy is great with acrylic and knows his stuff. It will have a couple chambers,a few of canisters as well as a refugium.
I'v been using a back pack skimmer and though it does a good job I'm looking for more.I'm tired of having my hands in the tank and spilling chemicals on my lights. As well as topping my tank off every other day.I'm also up-grading to a 3ft by 3ft by 18in with the overflow in the middle.I plan on using this set up for that tank, but will be using it on my 75 for the mean time.
The sump will have the trickle filter as well as the bio-balls.It will then go through another chamber with three canister filters. One filled wiyj carbons, one with a phosphate sponge and the other with a nitrite and nitrate absorbers. The skimmer is going to be 30in tall and 5in wide.I'm running a mag-drive 1250 to push it all.It will also have a 12in by 12'n cube attached for the refugium.I'll have a dsb in it as well as rock rubble and all diffrent types of plants and macro algea.I ordered a bunch of this stuff through ny lfs(great store) plus have some really nice pieces of the macro. He's going to mount a float valve on the sump and it will be in conjuction with a 12 gallon container filled with fresh ro water for top offs.
I forked out some serious money but feel it's well worth it.
