sun corals need food?

Does a sun coral need to be fed. I am thinking of putting one under a ledge where i cant reach too easily. I would not want to do it if it requires food. Well more than 1x per week anyway.
Wrong coral for me?

Wrong coral for you. Many people have a hard time keeping them and they do require spot feeding. I believe most use mysis.

I put mine on a back side ledge that I can get a baster back to. I have to wake it up with cyclopeeze first, then within an hour or so it fully extends and is ready for the frozen mysis. I feed mine 1-2 times a week and when I feed cyclopeeze to the rest of the tank, which is 3 times a week, it usually gets a little of that, too.

Sun coral can be very demanding about food. It most definitly must be fed. It is not photosynthetic and has no other way of making its own food. However, even though they are supposed to be a difficult coral, when they are happy I think they are some of the most incredible animals in the world. It can be done but, as the saying goes, if you have to ask........

I have two sun corals, one yellow and one orange, had them for almost two years. They must be fed as they are not photosynthetic (well, technically no coral is I guess), usually a few times a week. It's not too difficult to take care of, just keep it fed. I don't try to entice mine to feed, I wait until late at night when the polyps open and feed cyclopeeze, mysis, plankton, squid, krill, anything that fits in their mouth. They grow like crazy if you feed them. Really cool corals, I want a black one so badly.

it needs to be in a place of easy access because it does need to be spot fed!!!!
we have one big cluster and a tiny one and they are a pain. the shrimp steal from them and really put them in danger so we put a dome over them after spot feeding them and that keeps them out of harms way. my girlfriend loves the fact that she is the sole provider of this beautiful coral but i think its too much trouble when there are a lot of real nice looking corals that demand much less out there!
prefrence i guess, if you want a coral that needs you like a newborn baby than i say go for it. that way you know you wont be dissapointed.

definitely wrong coral. i've been neglecting my sun coral and it is suffering for it. i've been feeding it maybe 3x a week just to get the skin back all over.
now my tank is suffering for it from the extra food going in there. no happy medium.
