Sure Flow 1600 upgrade for maxi-jets

Does anyone have an opinion of these upgrade kits? I think they are supposed to make waves inside the tank. I don't know if they also increase flow. Any advice would be appreciated.

they most definitely increase flow.
they are not to make waves. my opinion is, they are good. good for turning a mj1200(295gph) into a 2100 gph powerhouse(or 1600, depending on which propeller)

That much flow? Almost twice as much as a Koralia 4 (1200 gph)? That would blow the side glass off my tank
For less than $13.00? Doesn't sound right. I just received an email from another fish supply place and this is what they said about the sure flow:
Easy-to-install upgrade kit for Maxi-Jet powerhead/pumps
* Converts Maxi-Jet powerheads into an adjustable wavemaker
* Inexpensive way to help improve aquarium water movement
Improve the performance of your Maxi-Jet powerhead. Clever upgrade kit converts your Maxi-Jet powerhead into a wavemaker. Install the Sure Flow 1600 propeller and upgrade kit onto your existing powerhead for better water flow. Excellent for reef aquariums or any setup that requires beneficial water movement. Rotational mounting bracket allows a full range of flow directions. Simply adjust the position of the attached powerhead to eliminate dead spots or areas with little water movement. Works with Maxi-Jet Models 400, 600, 900, and 1200

Just got one. A few things I found out (and verified afterwards on the web). If you have a maxijet 1200 and dont need the flow of the 2100 prop just buy or trade for a maxijet 400-900 because it will be annoyingly loud with the 1600gph prop. 2100 prop=maxijet 1200 only, 1600 prop= maxijet 400-900 only unless you are deaf. I ended up using the 1600gph with a maxijet 400 and its quiet, powerful (rated at 1300gph) with low power consumption (5 watts). I have it in a 3ft 30gallon and its got every part of the tank tumbling (below it, in front of it, bottom, back of tank, everywhere). magnet or solid hanging required. no way suction cups are going to hold it. just looking at it in the water it shimmy's like a small block chevy. When all said and done Koralia's are cheaper ($20 sure grip magnet + $15 upgrade flow kit + $15-20 if you dont have a maxijet) but I doubt they can match the flow. The Koralia 4 is rated at 1200gph and 8.5w while the maxi mod with maxijet 400 is rated at 1300gph at 5 watts. The koralia is obviously more engineered BUT the deal breaker was it looks like a big jet fighter engine and I only have a 30g while the maxi mod doesn't look too obtrusive at all.

yep. the koralia 4 is huge. i have 2 in my tank.
as far as wavemaking ability- how does it do this? it seems to just hang from a "hinge" of sorts, that you can manually adjust. what makes it a wavemaker?
i was under the impression it's a larger impeller and cage, with some new hanging/mounting hardware. this is the first i've heard it acts as a wavemaker.

its not a wavemaker in any way, just turns it from a traditional style powerhead to a broader dispersing propeller style powerhead. In fact depending on the prop and pump they can make annoying start up noise which would make me hesitant to use on a wavemaker. So far the maxi 1200 started quietly on both props but the maxi 400 start up is noisy and takes several good seconds to quiet down.

sounds like the koralia too...they are crazy noisy on startup.

Well I am not too concerned with startup noise as these babies will be running constantly. I have many maxi-jets. 4's, 9's and 12's. But how much flow is too much? I only have a 29 gal tank
I don't want to remove my two 9's and just run one with the sure flow. I still may have deadspots. I currently have one 9 on the back of the tank facing left and the other on the front facing right, with my LR in the middle.

29 gallon tank?
i have a 30 breeder. i'll use that as reference.
i have 2 mj1200's with those hydor flo attachments on them and a koralia 2, and i still think i could use a bit more flow.

They do put out sopme good flow, but I ditched mine and went with the koralias. The reason was because the unit sticks way out attatched to the Maxijet and add the hanging bracket and in a nano it can shade out the corals. Great for a large tank though. Just sticks out like about 6" if not a little more.

if you are asking, i'd beg you to read up on this forum before you add any corals.

unless you are going bare bottom and/or SPS friendly these are just too much for small tanks. As is using the smallest maxijet and prop I had to be VERY strategic to prevent sand storming in my 3ft 30g and still the occasional mini sand tornado forms but not enough to cloud or be bothersome. I dont have particularly fine sand either (mixed grade florida keys live sand). In a bare bottom SPS only tank one of these would probably be great in a 29g.
