In the fresh water world, they perform surgery on koi all the time........suture up torn fin rays, remove tumor lumps// masses, clear out egg impactions, etc...Clove oil is used to knock the fish out, and after that its basic veterinary surgery........Of course a lot of veterinarians are not familiar or up to par on fish diseases or biology once they leave vet school.........But I know of a person that had surgery on a feeder goldfish she bought a few years back that developed a lump.........IIRC surgery cost her in the neighborhood of $350.............to save what was originally a 10 cent feeder..........There is a fish doc in Georgia that routinely has fish shipped to him, that he performs surgery on.....specialty is koi and GF, but does others as well.........

My friend and I both said it would be cheaper to just go get another fish... A LOT cheaper. But my girlfriend made a good point when she said "Not if it's a 100 year old Koi".... Koi can live to be 200 years old. Let's not forget they are living creatures and some of them really do develop a pet/master relationship with their owner, not so different from dogs or cats. But yeah, I couldn't see myself paying hundreds of dollars to cure a fish I could buy 10 times over with the amount I spent at the vet.
I'd sell my soul to keep my Maddie dog around as long as possible though, so who am I to put value on the life of any other living creature.
