Switching from cc to sand?

I want to switch my 55 from cc to sand because everyone says cc is so bad although i haven't had any trouble. So my question is if i take out my ug filter and all my cc wouldn't i be removing most of the beneficial bacteria in my tank? :help:

Thats the thing with cc. It wont hold very much beneficial bacteria. Sand is the way to go. You shouldnt worry about the bacteria because it will all come back. Especially if you have Lr. Just make sure you purchase a cleaning crew to keep you sandbed arreated.

How much live sand would i need and how much could just come from home depot?

Do not take this as soundin, but this question has been asked before. I would suggest that you do a search on this forum for "swtich from CC to LR" or substitute the word for the initials. You should find some posts on this board that might help you. The search funtion is at the top right of the page.
Yes get rid of the UG filter. It will not help you with LS.
You will need to find some suitable sand to put in your tank. I will let people smarter than me answer that question for you.

you can purchase most of the sand at hd and use about a cup of ls to seed it.

you dont need to. Just put it in your tank and let it settle.
