Switching Substrate

I have a 55 gal f/o aquarium with CC substrate. I would really like to convert it to live sand but I'm not sure how. I am afraid that taking out the CC will restart a new cycle and my aquarium is 8 mo. old and well established. Has anybody else switched substrates with fish in the tank. If so how did you do it?
Thanks

I switched a month or so ago,and am very glad I did. Here's how without a recycle. You will need to get some large rubbermade containers to put the water, fish, and rock in. Then pump out as much water as you can.Put the rock in one container, the fish in another.Use a powerhead in with the fish to aggitate the surface so the water stays airated. Then remove all the CC,and remaining water.(be sure to have enough new saltwater mix ready to replace the lost water. Then refill the tank first out of the container with the rock in it. Now is when you put in the sand.I highly reccomend uaing NATURES OCEAN live sand. This sand contains all the needed bacteria so your tank will NOT RECYCLE.If you can't find this sand locally, this site sells it... Next replace the rock on top of the new sand. Then add the rest of the water and the fish. By draing the tank in this manner, your tank should be unclouded, and the risk of releasing bad bacteria into the water coloum is avoided. This may sound like alot of work, but is really quite easy, and can be done in a couple hours...GOOD LUCK,and kepp us posted as to how it goes...
