i was bs'ing around with a few ideas tonight and was wondering if anyone has tried this and if it works. i want a syphon that can move a lot of water very quickly and rather simply, so i dont keep getting saltwater in my mouth. if i would to buy a cheap water pump, maybe one that moves 10-20 gallons per minute, and hooked it up to some hose, whatever lenght i wanted. then put the pump on the floor in my room and ran it, and syphon'd the water out into the bathtub or something, would that work fine?

i assume u are talking about for water changes, i used to use a small power ead to do that but u will need to get one that is rated to pump the distance from your tank to the bathtub ( head )
IMO i just get 2-3 5 gal pails do a siphon with piece of 1/2" house fill the 3 buckets and then dump them then pour in the new water, takes me 15 min total to do a water change, i think it is easier this way no pumps to keep clean no need for exxtension cords etc,

There comes a point in most everyones life when they say "enough of the saltwater in my mouth."
Here's a tip for siphoning.
Place the bucket on the floor.
Place the end of the hose in your tank.
Lift the hose so all of it is entirely above the tank. Make like an inverted U shape rising up from the tank, up to your raised arm, then the hose falling back down towards your head.
Suck on the other end of the hose so the tankwater begins to rise up into the hose.
While keeping the end still in your mouth as you suck out the air, as the water approached the top of the curve, and begins to fall over the crest ......... drop your raised arm down and allow the water to fill the now downward U shaped hose.
As long as the end of the hose in your mouth is above the level of the end of the hose in the tank - the saltwater will not reach your taste buds.
When the U shaped hose is now full of tankwater, pull the end out of your mouth, cap this open end with your thumb, direct it down to the bucket and release your thumb.
Don't kneel down while doing this or you will get a mouthful

its not the saltwater in my mouth, ive gotten my fair share of that, i even threw up once(i always do in the ocean, guess it's only fair that i do it at home...hehe). its just that it takes forever. i even bought the python one that attaches to the sink, but my mom is very into everything looking nice in the house so im not allowed to unscrew the faucet piece to hook it up, so that was a waste of money. i wanna be able to get the water out of there quickly.
the pump would be on the floor right next to the tank, then there would be a long tube running from the pump to the bathtub. so the head would be only a few feet from the tank.

As long as you primed hose on the suction side of the pump, had it full of water first, then turned it on - it would work.
But if the suction side of the pump on the floor was not full or water first, I don't think most inexpensive pumps would draw the water up out of the tank. Worth a try though.
You could put a tee up near the surface of the tankwater in the line leading from the tank to the intake of the pump. Prime ( fill ) this line with tankwater by pouring the water in the opening of the tee with a funnel, then cap the opening of the tee. Then power up the pump.
That might pretty good.

Just drop a fairly powerful powerhead (I use a rio 1100) in the tank/sump with however long of tubing you need attached to the output of the powerhead, and plug it in.
