TAKE A LOOK (WHAT DO YOU THINK?)

Not a bad start, but those airstones have to GO! Bad idea in a reef tank. Just keep looking around on this site and you will get plenty of good advise on setup.

I know about the bubbles but she is just in love with them and it is her tank so I left them. As far as how old the tank is I am not quite sure. When she enlisted my help about 2 months ago the tank was already up and going but it was in bad shape the water paramators were way out of wack and there was a lot of fake coral in it. I'm not sure the person before me knew very much about salt water setups. I am gonna slowly but surely turn her tank into a beautiful reef. I was just wondering how I am doing so far.

the bubbles are not good, i agree. nice tank to work with, hopefully you'll be successful at changing her mind on the other stuff.

Why aren't the bubbles good. I have a 4 ft bubble wall that I run across the back of my reef. It improves gas exchange and does no harm, plus I like the look. My bubble wall is pretty even the whole way across and doesn't go full blast. If she likes the bubble wall then keep it

Jlem, bubbles are not bad per se but they will cause more rapid water evaporation that can increase your salinity and increased salt creeps at the top of your aquarium and your lighting fixtures. Bubbles from the bottom are not really a reef scenario anyways. But it's your choice.

My top off amounts have not increased since I added the wall in 6 months. I have a top so salt creep is not an issue for me but I could see how it would be if a tank did not have a lid.

Here a re few of her live stock. She has one of the prettiest starfish I have ever seen. I have never seen one quite like it before

The water was still a bit cloudy from me arranging her rocks but you can still see how beautiful this starfish is

sorry about the glass. I was doing her rock work and the fire fish decided to come out and see what was going on so I grabbed my camera.

Some cool mushrooms

I like the tank, but bubbles can do some corals harm...even death. If a slipper or plate coral gets air trapped underneath it, it can cause it to die. Also some leathers are sensitive to air bubbles trapped under their tissue. I also remember that Red General Stars are not reef safe. I would be surprised if he starts eating those pretty mushrooms.

I'm w/ R&R...remove that red general...unless just don't care whether it eats the corals or not...yes yes yes, some people are able to keep so called coral eaters in their tanks for months w/o incident...but it only takes once for it to happen & it has been reported on a regular basis...
also, what kind of substrate is that...it looks like it may be too thin a layer & too large a substrate thereby causeing water parameters to most likely always be off at some point unless she wants to increase the weekly/daily maintenance to go along w/ having to clean the lid more w/ the salt creep that will be cause by the bubbler on the lid or possible haven for algae that may need regular cleaning as well...

thanks rr, i was thinking the same thing, bubbles are very hard on corals, plus the salt creep, too much air in a sw tank is not good, like in a fw tank, and if you are using air stones, DEFINTIELY take them out! please, if you want to aerate the water, try adjusting power ehads and you r skimmer, in addition to the natural exchage from the dsb and plant life is all that is needed and EVEN RECCOMMENDED(with reason)

"Zack" she is only runnign two normal out put floresents that is why there are only mushrooms and other low light corals right now. That is the next thing I am gonna do next time I am down there is try to convience her to upgrade her lighting as well as get her to let me switch over to a DSB(This is gonna be an even harder sell then the bubble curtain the substrate is a mixture of crushed coral and seashells.{I must admit it does look pretty darn good as far as substrates go!}) And when I started doing this for her I just did it because this is my obsession this is what I love to do. But this last time she wouldn't take no for an answer when I told her she didn't have to pay me.
"Richard" about the bubble curtain she loves it so i left it in the tank.I have read that bubbles ae not good for certain corals and she will ask me before she just runs out and buys anything to put in the tank so I can read up on it so I will steer her away from those corals that will be harmed by the bubbles. I am aware of what is printed about "red General stars" but I believe that them just like any other stars are oportunist feeders and as long as they are fed well they will be fine. The starfish was in the tank long before I took over. I have informed her about the little guy and she is keeping an eye one him.
"Perchpsk" there are two different kinds of stars in her tank a "Red gerneral star" and an "orange linka star"
I really appreciate all the advice you guys and gals are giving me but please keep in mind this is not my tank and she doesn't know a whole lot about the whole process. That is why I am introducing it all to her slowly but surely. I took over becasue the guy that was being paid an outragous amount of money for set up and maintainance didn't really seem to know a whole lot about salt water setups. Dont get me wrong I am in no way claiming to be an expert I am learning as I go just as I am sure you all did. thanks for all the comments and advice it is greatly appreciated.
