Tang must go !

Alright, I have this BEAUTIFUL Sailfin Tang. When I bought him, I didnt know that tangs can't go in a 20gal. Good thing I found this place, anyways, he is about 3in now. He has been doing GREAT in my tank and im seeing alot of growth from him in the last month and a half. I reallly like this fish and dont want to see it suffer. After I found out tangs wont do well in a 20, I figured that I would upgrade soon to a 75. Right now I cant afford to upgrade to a bigger tank :( . What should I do with the tang? Take it back to the LFS and TRY to get some credit(which they wont do here), or what? After I get rid of the tang, which is going to happen... What fish could I possibly add to replace him? :D :(

i owuld call around, surely there must be at least one lfs owner who would like to get a helathy sailfin tang, when they get shipped in, no one knows how they will do, tellthem you had him fo rso long, and did not realize that theyshould have a larger aquarium before you bought him and you are jsut trying to find him a better home, maybe one would liek to take him, like i said, jsut to get a known helathy fish, so many tangs they get die from stress in shipping(and or ick), maybe one would like to get a good one, and see it get adequate quarters(maybe not, it would be a good idea, but hey, never hurts to try)
if not, try some local clubs, you may have one in your area, adn they are filled with hobbyists, who are hobbyists and not jsut people who want a tank
and sorry but in a 20, i would not have any more fish, 2 is enough for tha size of tank, IMO, keep in mind that the clown still has some growing to do yet too
sorry to hear you are geting ridof him, but glad to hear you are being reasonable for your fishes ;)

Sorry, my lfs won't take fish in either, it sucks. It does however prove a strong point--Do your homework BEFORE you buy anything. A sailfin had no buisness being in your tank even if you did plan for a bigger one later.
Good Luck

I find it odd that a lfs wouldn't take it even for a small trade in value. I mean I love those tangs and rarely ever see healthy guys in the lfs i have in the area. If all else fails post it on here. I'm sure there has to be someone (out of the 500 people on here at night) who lives close enough to you that could provide it a good home and give you a little something in return. I would if i was near ya and had my 75 up and running.

Unfortunately this story is all too familiar. Purchasing a fish that for one reason or another is no longer suited for a set-up. What to do? Generally speaking, most lfs's do not want to handle returns. Seems to be too much effort on their part. I could see the main point of concern by lfs regarding the health of the fish ( not wanting to deal with potential disease problems, or finding space to house these fish ).
I wish there would be some sort of club within communities that deal with these unwanted fish. A place where people could swap fish or bring in fish that have out-grown tanks. A place that your fish would be welcomed and not a burden (you know, the kind of feeling most lfs's depart to thier 'valued' clients when they bring back a fish). A community board for clients at lfs would also be nice, but that would be counter produtivbe to business. Imagine a board that post's a notice of "Beautiful FREE Flame Angel to a good home"! I don't think that would go over too well. In any case, just a thought/wish. TT.
