Tank Covers

I know you shouldnt have a glass top on your tank for various reasons, but do they make a cover that just covers maybe the first 2 inches all the way around to prevent jumpers? i just bought a diamond goby and want to stop him from jumping out.
or any other ideas would be great!

Eggcrate aka light diffuser panel. They sell it at lowes and it is very easy to cut and has many uses. Do a search for it on here.

What are the reasons for NOT having a glass top. It seems to me it would help control evaporation and some fixtures do not have a sheild.

Evaporation is good it helps cool the tank. It also allows us to put fresh ro/di water in our tanks ensuring water quality. Most good quality light fixtures have sheilds. The tops can also drown out the light and are an eye sore imo.

the reasons for not having a complete glass top is the water needs to have an oxygen exchange to get O2 in the water and that exchange helps control PH by keeping it constant.
If your light fixture doesnt have a shield it probably should to prevent salt creep and water from getting into bulbs

i bought egg crate tonight and have it on... the only thing i noticed is its not quite as bright as it was without (very minimal, but noticable) the egg crate i got is white and it seems to reflect a bunch a light.
unfortantly the reason i got it was to stop my diamond goby from jumping, but when i got home from the store w/ the egg crate he was on the floor... dang it!!!

If you have jumpers do you have to keep the eggcrate on forever or will the fish settle down? I know what you mean about the reflection off the eggcrate. Tank looks so much better with no top at all.

a jumper is always going to be a jumper and they will even try to jump through the eggcrate, also try turning the eggcrate over and see if you can get a little more light

would it be smart to cut the eggcrate out in the middle of the tank (middle of the water?) It seems to me most fish are jumpers when they go up the side of the tank and jump out.
Or will the just end up jumping onto the eggcrate?
the egg crate i got is squares probably about 1/2 inch (each side). i think they could still get through, but it would have to be an exact jump

I have had a glass cover on mine since January, should I take it off? I haven't had any problems yet? The rear 3" is open, is that OK?

you could probably do that, but its a chance to be taken, i would cover the whole thing to be safe

if you have had no problems you dont need to get rid of them. i got mine becuase of all the salt creap, i have a lot less now.if the rear is open why not just take the tops completely off, it looks better

from experiense not just gobies will jump, most saltwater fish will jump if startled for some reason. I've seen both my foxface, flame angel and firefish jump out of the water when I've scraced them cleaning the tank.
