tank cycling

if setting up a new tank can you an use live rock to cycle the tank? this would cure the rock as well correct? if so then i would need to fill the tank, treat the water for chlorine, add the salt, and drop in the rock - sound right or am i missing something?

You can cycle your tank and cure the live rock at the saem time. I did it and it worked out great. It may take a little longer to cycle but worth it. If you have to treat the water for chlorine than your using the wrong type of water. Avoid tap water. Use RO water. Either from an RO unit or you can buy it at Walmart for $.64 a gallon. You will regret using tap. I did and never will again. Fill the tank with RO water, mix in salt and get it around 1.023-1.025. Higher end is ideal for a reef tank. Place your rock in then add your live sand. Next is all patience. Cycling will take at least 4-6 weeks. Good luck

thx for the help. i have an r/o system for drinking water. i can use that. that will add about a week to the cycling time because it wont spit 100 gallons as fast as the hose hehehe. i am in no rush. thx!
