I think "established" varies a great deal:
Live rock? Cured or uncured?
How long was the tank fallow?
How big is the tank?
Substrate?
live stock?
Filtration?
lighting?
Personally, I think using your live rock can be a good indication of a tank's condition. Are you seeing a lot of new life (sponges, worms, coralline algaes) growing?

Thanks Guys My tank is not ready yet but I keep reading and think of new questions so when I am ready I will have a good understanding. I have read a couple books on reef aquariums and even they sometimes differ from one another.
Oh by the way I just put the second coat of urathaine and color on my stand and it looks cool. soon I will be up and running

thanks again Manny

Sounds good.
I know what you mean about books conflicting. I have to say, from my limited research, that Calfo and Fenner seem to be the most advanced of the authors. If it disagrees with them, then there better be a really strong argument why...

i read a lot of books before starting because i was scared of the cost and loss involved. i have to say that going through the boards at this site taught me so much more than any book i've ever read on the hobby. books are overpriced regarding fish and there are so many people wanting to help out just for the opportunity to see a new tank. my lfs people always want to come over and hang out to help. i'm the same way with other friends tanks. cleaning out my tank is a chore, but i'd gladly do it on a diff one to spend that time with an unfamiliar tank. :notsure:

You all are very helpfull and I do understand that established is a relative thing to what you have and what you do with it. So I am telling myself that I will wait at least 9 mos before i think it is well underway to being a well esatabished tank.

The thing that gets me is I have to wait, it is not like building a house when you are done building it you can call it done. And I also believe that I have found more information fron real trials on this web than in the books. Not saying the books arnt good because you find a lot of formulas and standards for this hobby in them.

Again Thank You All
