tank glass and pc lighting

Right now I am using a 96 watt daylight pc. The pc light is probably 2" above my glass that is 1/4" thick. After several months with this setup the glass broke right down the middle. I'm not sure as to why? Could it be b/c of the increase in outside temp increasing the house temp along with the light temp? That was alot........Not sure what to do. Would plexiglass from a Homedepot be better? Thanks.

why do you need a cover over your tank anyway? Do you have fish that are known to jump out?
If you wanted you could raise your lighting so it dosen't get any water on it. And then you could add some other type of cover that will allow light to penetrate. Maybe egg crate.
