Why is salinity so hard to get right~!! Anyway-- on my 20 long-the aquaclear 70 pipe that goes IN the tank looks a little long, tank is only 12in deep, this filter is obviously for a larger tank, would I be stupid for sawing the pipe a little shorter? Should still work right? And this filter came with a HUGE amount of carbon, so I should get a media bag and only use a little bit right?

I don't see any reason that you can't nip off some of the intake tube. Trying to get your salt right is most likly the hydro not you. I had one of those and could never get constant readings. It should be fine during set up and cycle period but you really should get a refractometer before you get livestock. It does make a world of difference.
Yes shoot for 1.025!
