Hi , 1st time poster. Im gettin ready to set up my 55 and i have a few questions.
i have florida crushed coral for base.
40lbs of rock for structure
Instant ocean salt
just got a sw test kit for ph nitrite nitrate and ammonia
and a hydrometer
I wanna ask your opinion on filtration and bacteria.
I have an Aqua CLear 300 i used in fw and a biowheel setup w/ power head.
the lfs told me the biowheel wouldnt support enuff bacteria, that i should get a sand filter(fluidized bed) but my power filter was fine.
wont the 40lb of rock be a huge colony of bacteria? do i really need to spend money on the sand unit or can i wait and see if its needed?
Next? WHat about lighting? Its gonna be a fish only tank, I have a 4 ft hood with 2-24 bulbs( just picked up new starters)How can I identify the bulbs i have? I was given a bag full 3 yrs ago when i bought the 55 gal tank.
Thanks,
Mr. Limpet

I think the filter will be fine for now, But you will need a protine skimmer in a few weeks after the tank cycles. The stock bulbs will also be ok for fish only. But will not promote groth on your live rock. Read the other posts about lighting Good luck. STEVE
