Pretty much agree with TUCH. They get fairly large(around 8"+). I think stocking factors in also. If it's an empty tank you might get away with a 75G. 48" by 18" is a fairly good amount of room for an 8" fish.

Actually, you are asking a funny kind of question that is being answered in two different directions. I am assuming you are asking how big of a tank for the fish to be happy... 55 gallon. I am going by pg 400 Marine fishes, I assume they are not very active swimmers however they DO get to 8 or 9 inches...
Considering all of your other fish play a role as far as bioload. But you can rest assured that if you get a humuhumu, you will not have other fish for very long they get increasingly aggressive as they get older and they get down right nasty as adults.

I would agree with that. My friend had one and it was fine till it got older and then it stressed all the other fish to death excpt the football size puffer he had. Nothing was messing with the puffer this thing was not right in the head. It would destroy anything you put in the tank. He had a fake ship in the tank and the puffer would move it from end to end and turn the rocks over. But they are kinda fun to watch eat. The puffer was a eating maching when it came to gold fish....
