I am looking to upgrade and was wondering if my brazilian dragon along with a miniatus grouper and emperor angel could live happily in a 180g or do these two fish get too big for this size tank. i know what size they grow to i am just curious what size tank people would suggest for them. Thanks alot, Blizz

I think so. To go to a bigger tank size that makes a difference to them you'd have to get one longer than the 6' the 180 is. A taller is only going to make a difference in the water parameters stability.

well then my next question is, is this a large enough system to maintain their waste? in other words, is this too large of a bio load?

180 should do just fine for these fish you should be able to keep even a few more fish if you like just make sure they are all compatible for each other.ive had much more fish than that in a 125 without water quality issues.reg water changes will keep it good

blizz.....you can get away with those fish in a 150 imo with maybe 2 more good sized fish.... the great thing about the grouper is he gets fairly large but I have never seen an active grouper except when feeding time so tank lentgh is not an issue there... he'll just need a nice cave to dwell at. the angel is the most active character of the 3. Most important factor is your skimmer... get a good skimmer... I would say euro reef for their build quality..own one myself and they are awesome or you can opt for a asm g4..
Good luck

do you think that the angel could fit in the 150g? cause its only 18" deep. that would be great as i could build it into my bar.

my 125 is 72x18x22 .the fish i kept in this tank for many yrs up until recently where 12 in panther grouper ,10 in silver scat,9 in lunear wrasse,12+ in vol lion,8 in spiney boxfish puffer,6 in bi colored foxface,24 in black moray eel,20 in mex dragon/jeweled moray.. all of these fish lived together for a few yrs ..
if you maintain good husbandry and compatability you should not have any problems with that many fish in a 180.ps in 5 yrs i have never used a skimmer on this tank

well, im still deciding on the size. i dont have the 180g yet. according to you this combo should be alright in a 125g for a few years. I may go this route and upgrade later as i would like to build it into my new bar anyways and the 180g wouldnt fit.
and as far as skimmers go, do you jusst do constant water changes? ive seen pictures of your tank and they were amazing.
Thanks alot for the help and advice. now i just have to think on it, Blizz

to be honest i would just spend the little bit extra and go for the 180 to start with the cost difference is not that much greater .you can get one custom sized to suite your needs or you can always change your bar plans that will be built around it.i have sold alot of tanks sinse i started this hobby and trust me you wont get even half of what you invest back out of it you will be lucky to get back even 1/4 of your cost..as far as water changes go i do 25% weekly to keep water quality up and always add prime to the new water
and thank you..once we get settle in our new house i plan are starting up again

It would probably cost another $750, and i have been through plenty of upgrades, and i dont mind spending more later on an upgrade because then i just have more tanks
i just have to think about it as money is kind of tight right now and the eel needs an upgrade soon

i would love to find a used tank that size but i can afford a new one, i just dont know if the family would be happy with the cost of a 180g verse the 125g. But i will start looking in the classifieds. didnt even think of that.
