my tempature is staying between 78 and 80 on its own(w/o heater on) between filters and circulation there are four powerheads going on at once do they generate enough heat to keep 40 gallon tank that warm?

One thing you can try that is cheap is to put a fan blowing over your pump under the tank. It cools my tank by about 5 degrees! Fans in the hood will help a lot too.

I think you might also want to think about the temperature these days. Has it been hot where you live? That can be the reason why the temperature is high without a heater. You might need one later when the temperature starts to cool down; that's if weather is the reason why the temp is high.
