tank temp

Hey All,
I have a fairly new tank, month old. It's a 120 show with dual overflow boxes, mag drive 12's, nautilus protein skimmer, 30 gal sump, 100 lbs lr, 120 lbs ls. I am having some trouble keeping my temp. consistent. I have an electronic temp. reader on my sump. It was telling me my temp. was 86.6. So, I put a small osalating fan on it and I got it to drop all the way down to 80.3. However, I am having to add a truck load of water each day. I live in Phoenix, AZ and the temp. has been super hot, we keep the air at 78 degrees during the day, but I have a power compact, which keeps the temp. high. What should I do? I attached the fan pointing directly down in the sump, which brought my temp. down. But the adding of water is ridiculous! Also, winter is coming and I would like to get a hold of this temp. issue. Any help would be appreciated!

u will probably need a chiller. what is the temp in the main tank? do u hv a glass top over the tank? if so, u might want to consider getting rid of it. most people dont hv a glass top.

Nothing wrong with evaporation as long as you are filling it back up on a regular basis. The glass top can cause problems with gas exchange and it will trap heat in the tank.
Are you able to take the glass top off without having to worry about kids or pets?

Yes, I have a nice canopy! Should I place the fan pointed at the power compact for awhile, or just take off the glass tops?

jerry not trying to argue with you here
I have a 210 that I run PCs on and my temp stays about 79, but I should add I only have 2 96watt bulbs on my tank. I run the ac at 75. I also have a glass top on my tank as well as have a canopy. I do not run a fan on my tank either. do you run a heater on the tank? if so it could be malfunctioning. as for the evaporation you could get a auto top off system.

Maybe cut out some holes in your canopy and install some computer fans directed under the lights. It is not your sump that is creating the heat, but your covered main tank

I would suggest taking off the glass tops to help with the temp control, but you will have more evaporation. I have fans blowing across the top of my tank under my lights and helps out quite a bit.

Personally I did not have problems with temp either when I had a glass top over it. This was because I did not have strong lighting as well. I replaced the glass top with egg crate because of gas exchange.

i live in phoenix too, the evapoation is not that bad where i m at, once a week i fill about 16 ounches fresh water not salt or premix, to keep the salt lvl on a steady lvl. i dont use cooler on my tank. dont know if this helps you much, but im more worried about the salt lvl.
