I agree. Around 80 is fine. Most people say around 74-78 but Every fish store around here is at least 80 and my 3 tanks stay around that too with no die-off from the heat.

Normal range on mine is 78-82....much higher or lower than that seems to cause problems. During the summer here in New Mexico I try to keep a fan blowing across the surface of the refugium and at times I've come close to installing small computor fans in the canopy on my display.
Mr. Bubble....I don't mind seeing you here.Personally I thought your answer was a good one ... minus the comment at the end.*_^

81 is OK i exaggerate okay might not wanna get past 85 or even 83.i stay around 78-80.i take off the lid and use a fan whenit get a little hot

My tank's temperature varies from night and day. The lowest it's ever been was 72*.. but on average, it is 81* in the day, and 78* at night.

I totally understand, I live in Stephenville and I am having to blast the AC to keep my temp around 78-80 thanks to my tank being next to a window.

Yes--my tank is near a window, and it got pretty warm, 82, today. Worrisome. I wonder if getting a powerhead and setting it near the surface of the tank would be helpful.
Patrick, your post made me feel sad. I'm sure I don't dislike you, why should I? In fact, I have to say every one of the posts on this message board that I have read, which is admittedly not all of them, have really been nice. Here, have a smile. :)

I agree with others that 81 is really not a problem.
My reef is almost always somewhere between 80 and 84.
In fact good old DR. Ron states that the richest and most diverse coral reefs have average temperatures of 82 to 84.
I guess what it all comes down to is where the animals you keep are from and what is the average temp of their natural environment.
Here is a link to some sea surface temp data from around the world. Keep in mind however these are surface temps and the further down in the water the cooler the temp will be.
From looking at other data I say a rough estimate of around a 2 degree drop per 100 meters.
<a href="http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/dsdt/oisst/oisstmon.htm" target="_blank">Sea surface temps</a>
If you know where your animals are from and what depth they are generaly found you can get a basic idea of what their natural temps are from the data on the charts.

I waited one day too long to turn my AC on I guess. It has been fairly hot here in eastern NC lately. Yesterday my tank temp was off the chart when I got home...my sebae anemone did not make it, everything else seems fine. My clown is a little lonely tonight. Tank temp is down to 80 again. Sad to lose something.

Just a note about the weather...
It was 91 on Tuesday, 85 on Wed, 87 yesterday, and it's 45 today. Welcome to Minnesota. It snowed west of here, they had to close an interstate, and they are talking in might snow here on Sunday, then be 70 on Tuesday again.
Being a weatherman is probably the best job in the world: it doesn't matter how right or wrong you are, you still get paid the same.

Couldn't agree with you more, Dr. K. They say politians use double-speak? Which is it, partly sunny or party cloudy? It's been at or above 90 here since Tuesday. I had to turn my AC on at home for me and my tank!

Dr kegel---lmao--isn't this great!!!!!
I love Minnesota!!! (I'm being VERY fesicious :D )
A/c--then furnace then a/c then furnace. Now it's supposed to snow here!!!!!!!!!!
Oh well, I'm sure it will melt when it's 95 or so on Monday.
Consistency I think is more important than actual temp--but obviously now we know certain corals are far less tolerant.
If mine hits the 84 mark I start adding ice cubes and remove the lid (don't forget the water conditioner after the cubes)
My fish do slow down a bit at these higher temps although it has never done any real harm, near as I can tell.
