I finally decided to stop using tap water. I cannot have an ro/di filter because I live in an apartment, so I decided to try distilled water. I went and got some from the local stop and shop. When I got home I decided to test it for ammonia, and guess what was in it. I have seen that some of you out there are using walmart water. Is that better, any input is greatlly app. thanks

What you really need to look for is RO/DI water. This is Reverse Osmosis/De ionized water. This by far the best water to use in any aquarium.
Distilled water only removes heavy metals and some minerals.
Why are you convinced your tapwater is bad???
Tap is all I have ever used.

Sorry for intruding but I have a question...
I am still learning about this hobby before I get my hands wet. Why is it you cant get an RO/DI filter with an apartment? I was going to go in that direction but I also live in an apartment.

I'm guessing that they are afraid of permanent installation.
Although they can be hooked up temperarily.

I am lucky enough to have a friend that works for the areas bio-enviromental engineering. He showed me a test of my tap water, and it was damn near perfect for SW. None of the N's, almost zero heavy metals, and a ph of about 8.0. I use a conditioner just incase there is any leaching from my lines, and a buffer, plus a kalkwasser drip. So I guess what I am saying is have your tap checked before buying all kinds of equipment for you tank. I will have mine checked every three months though just to make sure there are no changes, of course I'm lucky to have that friend I'm not sure what the cost would be with out him.
