how does it work?
i mean there's a hole in a sealed corner/back on the bottom of a tank, and a hole in the stand.
some plumbing is invovled so the water doesn't just flow straight down, right?

Yes, there is a pipe that runs down through the hole in the tank and stand and directs the water into the sump. If that pipe is included with the tank, I'm not sure.

yeah and how does it regulate the water flow going down the pipe?
if it just goes down like that wouldn't it flood the refugium in a heartbeat?
there must be some mechanism.

The water that goes down to the sump would only be skimmed from the very surface. When water goes down through the overflow, water level drops in the tank so not as much water would flow down the overflow.

What if you also have the holes drilled for the return as well? How do you keep the water from siphoning out in case of a power outage or something? Anyone have a diagram for plumbing a tank with pre drilled overflows?
