When I turn the lights off, there is a dredfull sound. It sound like something is cracking a shell or something inside the tank. I heard about mantis shrimp but I moved everything outside the tank. I checked all the holes in the rock and vernacles and crevices and all. And syphoned all the sand to see if he was hiding in there and I found nothig but the soud keeps comming back. I can hear it all night long. Any ideas or suggestions?

You have a Mantis or a Pistol shrimp. They can hide in the darnedest places inside crevices in the rocks.

Do you know for sure that you have a mantis shrimp? Man, i've heard some crazy things about them, like they pack a punch equal to the force of a .22 cal. Yikes!!! Is that true? For a shrimp???

I agree, I think I would move half of the rock into a tote and see if the sounds move. If not move the other half into the tote and see if the sounds move.

My pistol snaps all night, yes very annoying. When I put frozen food out, he always comes out of his hiding spot for just a moment to get some...yeah, if it's a pistol shrimp get a shrimp goby, if it is a mantis, sell it. Good luck.

Ok, but how do I know if I have one or not. I removed all the rock, place it on a table and inspected all the holes and crevices: NOTHING, and I used a long stick to dig into the holes, I don't want to shake hands with a mantis. I found nothing, but yet I still hearing the sound. I will get a shrimp gobby any way. But once ahain how do I know what I have? Aldo any suggestions about pepermint shrimp to get rid off aiptasia in a reef tank with a bubble coral, Torch coral, stra polyps and zoo's?

Actually---the Mantis Shrimp isn't really a shrimp at all.
First of all you need to figure out exactly what is in your tank. If it's a Mantis Shrimp then your best time to look for it would be at night, when the tapping sound occurs. Turn all the lights out in the tank and the room and go in with a red light flashlight. Any other type of light will scare off anything.
Secondly, you can't solve the problem if you don't know what it is. Are you sure it's coming from the tank? Could it be something in the house? Random, yes---but let us pinpoint the problem.

I see you have coral so that makes my idea a little more complicated. If you get a peppermint shrimp and you have a mantis your peppermint won’t last long. Do you have any other live stock on the tank?

it is definetely in the tank, unless I have the gost of a nut craker in my bedroom where the tank is. I will try to gwet the red light and put everything in dark. I will keep you posted. And what if this is a mantis???

Haha ghost of a nutcracker xD
Well if it is a mantis shrimp---then you've got to get it out (duh hah). You could use bait traps.

I don't have much experience with pistol shrimps or mantis shirmp but if there was one wouldn't he be eating some of your livestock ? Is anything disappearing ? I know they are scavengers but I would expect something is being like a hermit crab and you find the empty or brocken shell. Otherwise, I vote for the ghost of a nut cracker.

Depends on the size--if its smaller then most of the livestock, I wouldn't think it'd take it on. But we're not even sure if it is a mantis yet.

Get a flashlight with a red cover for a lens. Look at your tank in the dark with the red light. Your animals cannot see that there is a light on, you might be able to see what ever it is you have.

The other possibility is your heater switching on and off. I have a Stealth and the contacts click when it turns on and off.
Seems like you are able to get the rock in and out with little problem so the idea that cveverly suggested is a good one. When you do it see if you can mix up some salt water that is around 1.030. This would allow you a hypersalinity dip that may drive the critter out of the rock if there is one.
Trying to dig one of these things out with a stick is not a very good method always as the holes are sometimes quite long and you cannot reach all the way back or around corners if they turn.

If it gets more active at night than it is probably a pistol shrimp and not a mantis. My mantis' go to bed at night.... they pic up some shells, close the door, and hang a sign on the entrance that says "nobody come knocking until morning."
A mantis will also see the red light... their colour spectrum is AMAZING!!
I have had a pistol for YEARS and I have yet to see it. I tried recording the differences in sound but I couldn't capture it over the other tank sounds. It was an old recorder.
Heaters are indeed a souce of clicking and it would make sense that it would click at night when the lights are off and the water temp dips....
