I wouldn't count on your trigger doing tricks and DON'T get mad at him if you try and he doesn't do it. The key to teaching any animal to do a trick is to reward them when they do it by themselves. If your trigger is not a spitter then maybe try to get him to spit. Positive reinforcement is the key. I have a Jack Russel Terrier. I used to train dogs in the old fashioned "do what I say" method. I didn't do it long, but some breeds adapt very well to comands. Jacks do not. They do what they want. To teach your fish you should see what skills he already has then give a little nibble of a treat when he does what you want. Don't bank on getting him to spit though unless he already does it! My little hawk is semi-trained so far. He knows my voice and comes to the glass when I call him (ignores my son, he doesn't feed him). He comes up to get food from me. He is not doing anything outside of his usual routine that I saw him do at the lfs I bought him at. Don't expect a miricle out of your fish.

There is a down side to this, I have 3 Volitans, Pinktail and a Puffer and all of them spit water, all in the same tank. What a mess, I constantly have SW running down the front of my tank, the Back I can not reach, so you can imagine what a mess that is .....lol
As I am washing the front, they are spitting water, it is daily, the front is never clean.

yeah cleaning wouldnt be fun but it was just really really cool
so the best way would be to hold a piece of food right above the water and get him to come up to the top give a piece of food , then get him to spit at food
I know he does spit cus when i feed mysis youll see him look in a rock see a piece of food then spit and the food comes out of the rock

No cleaning is not fun, but wanabebell I wanted to mention that triggers can be jumpers, cover your tank if it is not already covered, my Pinktail has never jumped but both my Bluethroats have and luckily I was in the room both times.
