i have a sump as a filtre, but before that i had a eihem wet/dry filtre model 2229. its killing me to see it not doing anything. I have it on the shelf, and after spending $500.00 canadian for it i wanted to put it to use! SO I took out the rocks and stuff that where inside the thing and filled it up with bioballs! was this a good idea, or can i use it to do better things with? thanks

IMO I think you'd make better use out of it as suplemental circulation. The bioballs are just nitrate traps that will make it harder to keep the algae down in your tank. I'd pull them out and run it empty if it were me and I felt like I had to use it....or maybe use it as an excuse to set up another tank :D

thanks diatom, I'm taking a few steps forward here. In my sump I also have bioballs which im going to take out and turn it into a refugium. the problem here is that nobody has macro algai, so I have to wait to purchase some somwhere. thanks for the input, this tank is enough!!!!!!!!! LOL :D

Seabass,
I have the same exact dilemna. Same eheim and all. Mine is on the shelf. Removing it has had an incredibly positive impact on my tank. The hair algae is slowly disappearing, thanks to my turbos, and nitrates went from about 40 to 0. I'll probably sell mine because even when I do add another tank I'm not going to use it. Good luck.
