Temp change

Last night it got pertty cold. I was nto sure when the right time is to put my heater in. When I got up this moring the temp changed from 77 or 76 to about 74 or 75. A change like that can be harmful, right? Do you think that is enough to send my clown into shock??
Also.. I guess its time to put the heater in. Do most of them regulate the tem to stay at the temp u set it at? No matter what the temp is outside the tank. What I mean is.. if i set it at 78 and then we get a hot spell will the heater shut off?
Thanks so much!!!

hello what kind of heater do you have? and how many watts are you using? try a ebo jager i use them in all my tanks. once you got the heater the instrustions are in the box follow the instrution and set the temperature you want and leave it overnight and your heater will do most of the work for you it will shut off and on to it reaches the temperature you set it in. this heater is a submerggible heater cost more but very good it last a long time. good luck :D :D

Hi Becky.
I've had my heater in my tank since I set it up, and it's only recently been kicking on since it's cooled off here in MN. There is some descrepency here, but typically your heater should be 3 to 5 watts per gallon. I personally have about 4 watts per gallon. I use a Renassance brand, and it has a temp setting, although not sumbersible. It's a nice heater, and very easy to set up.
Helpful hint: If you can, put the heater in a place where there is a decent amount of water movement to distibute the heat more evenly throughout the tank. If you don't, you can easily develop "warm pockets" in the tank, and "cool pockets". These naturally occur in your tank anyway, and the less drastic the temp change from one side of the tank to the other, the better.
