Test kit

I have a red sea test kit and it seems like its working fine. Get the big daddy though with all the test kits in it such as phosphate, calcium and such.

Salifert and LaMotte are considered to be the best, but they are expensive. I have used both SeaTest and Red Sea, and have liked both. You can buy each test individually, so you might want to get one of the more critical tests, like nitrate, and see how you like it. I think the only way to see if there is a difference would be to compare them side by side, but that means you'd have to buy both. The ones you need to have for fish only set-ups are Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, ph, and alkalinity (also called Carbonate hardness). If you're doing a reef, add phospate, calcium, and low range nitrate. You can also test for strontium, magnesium, silicates, dissolved oxygen... Oh, and copper, if you're using copper to treat fish, you should have a copper test kit so you'll know how much is in the water. To give you an idea of cost, the LaMotte Nitrate kit is about $45. Salifert is about $14, SeaTest or Red Sea Nitrate kit is around $10. It is always cheaper to buy a set that has several different tests in it, like the SeaTest Basic marine, or Reef set. That will save you a little $.
