Testing RO water

I was wondering how to know if my RODI unit is working properly, I occasionally test the water for phosphates, nitrites and nitrates. How do you know when the membrane needs to be replaced, I have had my unit for 1 year, I replace the cannisters every 6 months, DI when color changes. Do I need a TDS meter, and what exactly do they detect. I am having hair algae problems and after I change my bulbs I only have my R/O unit to blame.

A TDS (total disolved solids) meter is helpful in detecting RO membrane replacement intervals. Sounds like you've stayed on top of the RO unit so far, but it may very well be time for a new membrane....HTH
