how often do you have to test water in tank

2 times a week, (that is what i have heard), i test mine once a week or when i do water chnges

Depends on the test...
I've got a pH monitor to constantly watch pH. and I float a glass hydrometer in my refugium to watch salinity.
Others weekly or so, but as I am now adding corals tests will increase.
