The beloved NEMO

Finding Nemo has brought a lot of outsiders into the world of marine fishkeeping. There are lots of horror stories about how badly treated perculas and hippos end up dead due to bad advice from the LFS, and God forbid, national news starring the spokesman for Tetra.
But, it has also brought conscientious hobbyists away from freshwater and to saltwater. Many people on this website have noted how many newbies have arrived after Finding Nemo was released in theaters May 30.
Personally, I absolutely love the movie. I saw it 3 times before it left the movie theater in town. It made me laugh, it made me a little mad, and it even made me cry the first time I saw what happened to Coral and Nemo's siblings at the beginning. :( I think that it is a good movie for children and adults...
It is not the movie that made a disaster out of LFS's everywhere. It was stupid parents not researching the hobby first, and it was stupid LFS workers trying to make some commission.
I understand why many marine aquarists don't like the movie...because of the way so many clownfish must have died over this summer...but seriously guys, is Finding Nemo really that bad that it is such a taboo for people to mention the name of it on this website?
I honestly can't wait for the movie to be released on DVD so I can watch it again. :D
"Fish are friends, not food!"

I'm sure most of us would say that did lots of stupid things when we first started and those of us that continued to have a passion for it screwed up then took the time to learn so we didn't make the same mistakes. Hopefully everyone else will do the same. Heck that's what this board is for.

The whole thing is terrible. Yet again today, while at my lfs, a father was telling his small daughter pick out a bunch of colorful Nemo's (not even meaning clowns) and he will buy the tank and go home and put them in. They were in the salt section......
From now on I get everything(supplies, fish, salt, etc.) on line. I do not think I will go back to another lfs, the above situation happens all day, everyday...

do we all remember the nightmare that 101 Dalmations brought?
Darling movie, but tons of parents felt compelled to purchase one for their child without researching them. They can be difficult dogs if not trained on how to care for them. As a result, a flood of unwanted dogs into the already over populated shelters.

Thats like blaming rap music for some kid shooting another kid. Movies, music, ect......have been around forever, and the only thing thats changed is people now always seem to have a way of blaming what they do on someone or something else.

I hear these stories about parents buying their kids SW Fish and throwing them in a tank the same day. Yet I have never seen this happen at my LFS (Probably b/c the owners are conscienious about selling fish to people who are not ready). I haven't even seen this at the ***** a.k.a. Deathco near me.

I am not blaming Disney nor Pixar for the problems of the fish, dogs, birds, cats etc.....just that these are things that need to be thought through when purchased. Its not a cabbage patch doll, poke man, or whatever else that is popular at the moment. My kids would love a "Dory" fish and anything else that was in the movie to go along with our perc whom by the way is NOT named nemo, we have had had him for awhile. Its Bozo (their idea)
But they understand the ways of our "fish world". We can't have every fish we want. We DO unfortunately have a LFS around us that will sell ANY thing to ANY one that wants it. It makes me sick. I am not even sure that if they did tell the customer that they should not have the fish, they would listen. Some people its purely entertainment and if it dies, "oh well....we will buy another"
We love all of these movies, but it doesn't mean we have a house full of the main characters (thank goodness):D

I liked the movie... I really like how interested my 6-year old is in my tank now after seeing the movie:). It has also sparked the interest of many others and brought many new people into the hobby. 2- thumbs up from me.
Now for the other side:( . IMO, LFSs & irresponsible parents has more to do with the fish deaths than the movie.

I've already been told that I am going to get the movie for Christmas, but if it comes out at the beginning of November...tehy might just have to get me something else. ;)
I've already told all my friends that they will be forced to sit in front of my TV so they can see what I went so nuts about over the summer.
I had been planning a SW tank since last Christmas when I got my new 20 gallon tank, but I was too afraid to do it since it is harder than the FW that was I used to...good thing I found this website though, becuase the movie gave me that extra push I needed to go into SW. The animators did such a wonderful job with all the fish and inverts...it looks so real. ;) Now more than half of the tanks I have are SW and I have a nano reef on the way. And no "Nemos" died in my tanks becuase I was schmart enough to research before impulse buying.
