I think palythoas are connected by a commonly shared mat, and zoos are separate polyps. Not sure, reefkprZ said it somewhere a while ago but I think what I said was right.

Zoanthus have smaller polyps and reproduce by forming buds from the base of the mated tissue. They do not incorporate sediment into it’s base like palys. The oral disk is in the center of tightly packed tentacles
Palythoa have larger polyps but are also embedded in a common tissue. The texture of the base of both the Palythoa and Protopalythoa is rough from the incorporation of sand and sediment directly in the tissue. The larger polyps lend themselves to feeding on larger meatier foods.
Protopalythoa much like the Palythoa in size but with the exception that the polyps are not connected to one mass of tissue. Some seem to have less more pointed tentacles in some cases they even alternate up and down

I swear I either answered this thread today or answered the same exact question somewhere else....
Teresa is dead on when she says this....

It has much less to do w/size then what people think. There's more to it then that and that gritty stalk tells more then size does.
