They found it in a barn, I guess a beta tester was getting some
in a haystack and dropped his phone...
While Apple may tinker with the final packaging and design of the final phone, it's clear that the features in this lost-and-found next-generation iPhone are drastically new and drastically different from what came before. Here's the detailed list of our findings:
What's new
• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It's unclear if it's the 960x640 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the "Connect to iTunes" screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic
What's changed
• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound
• An aluminum border going completely around the outside
• Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
• Everything is more squared off
• 3 grams heavier
• 16% Larger battery
• Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery

The display is supposed to be the new oled technology. Sony has an 11" TV made with that screen, and it's the closest thing to 'live' that I've ever seen.

I saw this also... it's all over facebook. I am so stoked to know it's coming with video chat!!!!! YES!!!
What I really want to know is if it will be available for Verizon.

Apple has stated they will be offering an IPhone with CDMA capability (the network Verizon and Sprint use), but it won't be until sometime next year.

They are still negotiating an exclusivity contract with AT&T. So we (in the united states) may not see it. Not that a CDMA phone would be any use overseas. Since they mainly use GSM. So you may not have to wait much longer

All the newer Verizon phones can work on both CDMA and GSM. You just have to call Verizon if you're going overseas and they can activate it to work in Europe. I do it all the time for my employees that travel

I never got into the whole iPod / iPhone thing for the longest time since iphone was only offered on AT&T and ipods are so expensive. Now that I have an ipod touch, I am now caught up in the whole Apple cult. I now can’t wait for the iphone to be offered on Verizon.

I know Verizon has the capability, but Apple just isn't gearing up to provide the compatible phone for those networks this year. This summer is supposed to be the big release date for this new IPhone that was 'conveniently' left at this bar. I doubt Apple wants to deal with the dramatic change of their biggest cash cow, and also adding virtually every other cell provider at the same time.

Why not? How many iPhones have they sold? 50 million? Verizon has about that many subscribers. Who not add another 25 or so million more unit sales... at about a 50% gross margin that is PLENTY of reasons to open up a new market. That release plan worked really well with the razor. And adds a few more years of product life to a core design, in a market with phones that last 6 months before they're obsolete...

Thats why the stock went up when the rumor came out about offering a version of the iphone for verizon. They have already sold over 41 million phones since late last year. No reason to think that this number wouldn't go up dramatically if they started offering the phone through new carriers.

Found this article dated 4/8/2101 ---
Verizon Wireless customers aren't the only ones who want to see Apple's (AAPL) wildly popular iPhone on their network: Verizon (VZ) CEO Ivan Seidenberg wants a piece of the iPhone action as well.
This week, Seidenberg said Verizon has informed Apple that it wants to offer the iPhone to its customers. Seidenberg's remarks were made in a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations on Tuesday cited by Reuters.
Seidenberg said that while the decision to roll out a Verizon-compatible iPhone is up to Apple, he thinks his company will ultimately be able to offer the product.
"Eventually it's our view we'll get to carrying Apple," Seidenberg said.
Verizon iPhone: 2010 or 2011?
Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple is preparing two new iPhone models, one of which could be compatible with Verizon Wireless's CDMA network. Such a development would end three years of AT&T (T) iPhone exclusivity.
Verizon Wireless is the largest mobile carrier in the U.S. and has been particularly aggressive in marketing phones based on Google's (GOOG) Android operating system. Most analysts think it's only a matter of time before Verizon gets the iPhone -- but opinion is split as to whether the device will appear late this year, or early next year.
In its report, The Journal said a Taiwan-based manufacturer named Pegatron "is scheduled to start mass-producing the CDMA iPhones in September, but it was unclear when Apple might make the model available."
Last week, Mark McKechnie, an analyst at Broadpoint AmTech, released a note on BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion (RIMM), introducing a fiscal year 2012 earnings estimate of $6.25 a share, "which factors in an iPhone launch" at Verizon Wireless in early 2011.

And AFTER all the details were posted on the web anyways. If nothing was posted/release yet I could see them trying to prevent it, but their goose was out there already
?
Though IIRC they didn't have the phone operational, just to the 'i-tunes' homepage, so I'm thinking Apple wanted to stop them from hacking into it? Though if the phone was sent back already, that's tough...
Also the side, perhaps main topic is very interesting, the rights of journalists-bloggers. It takes someone 15mins to setup a blog, so I don't think everyone bloggers out there should fall under the "journalists rights." Though I do feel journalists should be protected, so how do we tell the difference of a legitimate blogger from a kid with a webpage?

Now, putting aside my feels about apple, but this is a criminal issue. It is up to the DA to pursue this or not. Not really Apple.

I agree, but the blog in question, Gizmodo, is not just some kid blogging out of his parents basement. Its a pretty well respected tech blog with a LOT of readers.
