The "Red Light" district?

Shouldnt I be able to look into my reef with a red lens without the critters scrambling? I though red light couldnt penetrate water very far, so most sea critters couldnt see red light.
But, Peering into my reef with a red lens still sends the creatures, like the 3/4 inch white/opaque shrimp looking buggers running for cover...hummm...
Thoughts?

well what I have is a little "night light" that is plugged in near my tanks, I can go up to them when the lights are off and watch at night..... all the little critters come out to play!!!
