Whaddup guys,
I thought I'd share this story with you guys that just dawned on my yesterday after a phonecall with mi amigo(read, I totally forgot about it). I'll try to make it short and sweet.
Growing up my best friend now of 20 years had a 29gal. Saltwater(FO) when we where 16. He was working in the Fish Dept. - one of the Local Wally-worlds(Wal*mart). He apparently convinced them to let him setup two Saltwater tanks as he was getting allot of requests from this *Clientel*. He was running the fish show and he ended up setting up a Rudementary 29gallon tank. He just had a regular 29gal, NO lr or LS a basic Bio-wheel/pump system, generic floros and a really lousy bed composed of good ole Turquise colored(coated) freshwater rocks.
He went out and bought the best salt he could find. He and I can't remember the Salt brand but it was expensive(especially for middle class kids making minimum wage). He was running tap water(out of his hose no less), and I distinctly remember my father setting up a water filter system as the water was crappy. Apparently he let the tank sit& cycle for a full month+ before he added anything. He started out with a very juvy Dwarf Lion and a Scooter bleeny. Soon after he added some type of Trigger(Surely not suited for his relatively small tank). All of the fish where raised together and none bothered eachother.
Well, He ran that tank for almost two years with somewhat regular water changes(tap) and just carbon/ bio-wheel for filtration(again no ls or LR ever). NONE of his fish ever died or ever suffered health problems like ick. His Dwarf Lion grew to be the size of a freaking Softball.....he turned into a huge mother with a mouth the size of a silverdollar. All he fed the Lion was Feeder Goldfish from his work and his Lion loved to hang out on the generic rock he evnetually added.
To this day I haven't seen a Dwarf Lion that could hold a candle to his monster living in a medicore filtered tank with crappy tap water, great salt and eating gold fish........lmfao. He said that when it bagged him up to sell to the LFS that the dude dropped his jaw. The guy couldn't believe how big his Dwarf Lion was. The dude asked him if he was feeding it Brine SHrimp and the guy laughed when he told him what he was feeding it.
I don't know if his Dwarf Lion was record size but it wouldn't suprise. If that fish where still around he'd surely be the size of a shark...lol.
100% true story, hope yooz enjoyed it.
Peace
