I boughta chunk of Liverock today at the lfs and I should have known something was strange when it was the only piece in the tank, however it was just a beautiful piece.
Well low and behold im sitting here watching the tank with the light out, but another light in the room on and what do i see creep out but an octopus! Its about the size of a nickel around and its tetacles are about 1 inch long. hes a tiny guy, and id imagine that since hes so small he cant be a real preditor, but I dont really want him in my reef. However the problem is... theres no way to get him out! If you move the liverock hes on, he shoots accross the tank to something else, hes quite amazing really.

Man thats pretty sweet. If I were you (that is if you can catch him) I would setup a smaller tank just for him. A 20 long or something like that would be pretty sweet. Good luck to ya.

he will eat your fish and move the rock about at will as soon as he gets bigger. and they grow fast, some are deadly poisionous. That is pretty cool, but they are definately not reef safe.

Its not a blue ring :) I got him out and took him to the LFS and its a species of dwarf Octopus. It wont get bigger than a ping pong ball according to the LFS.

Ryan... If you can, I'd love to see a few pics of the little guy. I've just setup a new tank in my office, and I'd love to be able to put a small octo in there by himself (since I can't put one in my reef at home). Got any other info on him (species, etc.)?

I miss my octopus. :( He was so smart and played games with me at night. I used a sharpened chopstick to feed him with and he'd always go after the stick and my hand. We'd have a tug-of-war match until he'd give up and release the stick. It is amazing how strong they are! Once I can get a tank to dedicate to an octopus, I'll get another. I had to give mine back to the store because he could get out at will and I was afraid my Doberman would find him.
