I was at wallmart tonight checking out some stuff.
I looked at lights.
There was this.
SUNSHINE
full spectrum
simulates noonday summer sun
15 watts
Would this lighting be ok in a tank for coraline algae and low light corals??
55 gallon
5 blue leg hermits
23 lbs liverock
4 inch DSB

most will tel you no - but you are not asking for a lot of light - shjould do fine for a few months while you begin to create a brighter environ with power compacts if you plan to move on with a reff type tank.

no,and it was probably a freshwater bulb. my roommate bought some of those bulbs for a 55. they lasted maybe a week before they gave off a horrible yellow hazy look. if you really want to have corals and all, then you are going to need to upgrade. if i remember, the light fixtures that come with a 55 are the 24 in 40watt, but im not sure. even then its not enough light to properly keep corals. anyways, look around this board about lighting questions. there are lots of options on upgrades, its just a matter of personal preference and finance. hth

I know its not the minimum required 3 watts per gallon for certian corals. And they arent regualr aquarium lights either (flourescent). I would like to know if they will hurt my tank and/or if they will provide enough light for coraline algae and shrooms.
