things touchin the heater?

I have the JBJ nano and i was just wondering since i've seen that everybody puts there heater in the first collum, could i also put my LR in there with it? It would have to be touching it is basically why i'm asking.
If someone could tell me exactly how they have there's arranged that would be a great help. Thanks,

The live rock won't hurt anything if it is touching the heater.
You definitely would not want it buried in sand or touching any kind of sponge or filter cartridge though.
