I was struggling with my pool filter yesterday, and my hands slipped. i felt a sharp pain in my ribcage three ribs under my underarm :(
yesterday, i caught a nerf football right there and almost doubled over, but didnt want to embarass myself (its a nerf...)
today, i can't carry my daughter on that side, couldnt lift her, nothing :(
guess its a trip to the dr's office monday...

yea, i'm thinking just pulled muscle after today. that or the stuff between the ribs is bruised. pain though is enough that extra str. tylenol isn't helping.

Tylenol wont do Jack for this. You should be using a Non steroidal anti inflammatory such as Ibuproben/Advil/Motrin or Naproxen/Aleve. The ibuprofen family is usually better because you can take them every 4-6 hours where Aleve is every 12 hours. Good luck, hope nothing is broken!

pullingstraining intercostal muscles is extremely painful, but thankfully heals much easier than actually breaking ribs. let's hope that's all it is, and make sure you chill out your activity level for a few days just so you don't exacerbate things. also, staying well hydrated will help A LOT. feel better!!

hmm, i usually just use advil for headaches, i'll try some for this. aleve actually upsets my stomache so i dn't take it at all.
as of this morning, my whole ribcage hurts like mad. it was very uncomfortable sleeping :( i like sleeping on my side and that was completely out of the question.

i've cracked a few in my time. never broken though. broken is really dangerous because it can puncture your lung or worse. i cracked 2 ice skating and 1 playing lacrosse. the ice skating injury wasnt bad because i could rest it out, but in HS i had to still play lacrosse with a cracked rib, which was no fun. go to costco/wallmart and find "200 milligram ibuprofen liquid gels" get the store brand. they are amazing. they kick in in about 15 mins and if i take 3-4 (i am a big dude) i feel no pain. all you can do is dull the pain and wait 6 weeks for them to heal. the one i had during lacrosse took about 10 weeks to heal because i kept re-injuring it.

my experience in the x-ray field leads me to believe that you did not break your rib, especially if you noticed the pain after messing with a filter. i see broken ribs due to trauma like fights, blows to the ribs from any source. the intercostal muscles really can hurt bad if you strain them.

People in CT have pools

Agree, breaks typically come from "impact", sounds like a pulled/strained/torn muscle.

it really does sound like a strainpull - but if you don't stay off your feet, it's only going to get worse. SIT DOWN! RELAX! STOP LIFTING STUFF! MANDATORY 3DAY VACATION!!!
and the above statements are indeed correct - tylenol is not an anti-inflammatory, it won't help at all. you need ibuprofin (advil).

30 foot diameter above ground :) i'm 2 hours away fromanything closely resembling a beach.
as for the filter, its a DE filter that the ring holding the two pieces together got stuck. i've been sucking down advil at the beach today (actually found a sand sifting crab that is in my QT right now
) and that has helped.

you should be fine.. don't sound too broken to me. I have broken 4 ribs to date, between soccer and my quad.. not a fun experience!

I would say you pulled a muscle .
I have had broken ribs before and you would know it . It hurts to breath if your ribs are broken or even cracked .
