If you build your own tank, I recommend building it out of glass. Aside from the glass being cheaper than the acrylic, you will be able to glue it much easier than acrylic. With acrylic, you have to have the edges perfectly straight and smooth, or you don't get a good bond... Make sure you get the right thickness of glass though. Just look at tanks in stores and copy the size they used, but make sure you copy an Oceanic brand tank, because they don't use tempered glass, which is heated to make it stronger (but then it cannot be drilled later). Also make sure the silicon glue you use is safe for aquarium use. I use a DAP brand sealer. Make sure it says "safe for food contact" on the tube (get out your magnifying glass!) and you'll be safe.
One thing to consider before building your own tank, if it breaks because you didn't build it strong enough, then you can't go back to the store for a refund... it's your problem. Do the research in advance. Just a thought.
