this might be a stupid ? but bare with me

i want to get the octous nw 200 skimmer
well once i noticed i didnt have room in my sump i thought about this....
can i put the skimmer in my refug but the only part that is big enuff is in the center part where my sand and plants are....
can i put the skimmer on top of the sand with the plants or this wont work?
please im new so it might be a stupid question but i would like some input!
will it work?
does it work the same way as if it was in the sump?

if you put the skimmer in with the sand it will blow it around and suck it up and the fuge will not do its job can you move the sand to another spot
if not you are stuck you might look into an outside mount skimmer
