Thoughts on LED lighting

It seems that LED lighting will be as widely used as MH or T5 for a reef tank.
Anyone have experience with them yet?
If so, what formula for power do you use?
If I use 8x36 T5 for my 95g reef, what would be an equivalent power in LED?
Thanks

I will help bump this
I don’t know much from my use, but I am hearing that the 3w LEDs spaced somewhere around 1.5 – 3 inches apart to get full coverage.

If you want LEDs that will sustain corals, then you want to be using the 3w CREE XR-E or XP-G LEDs. 1.5-3" spacing is the average, but also depends on what (if any) optics you are using. There is a lot of info on some of the other big forums.
At this point the only decent fully-assembled units are from Aquailluminations.

I am just getting the stuff rounded up to do my first. I am going for a moderate light system over a 120 and starting with 84 3 watt Cree's. 6 rows spaced 2.75" apart with no optics. The LED "Gurus" tell me that should be close.

That was part of my initial post, the calculation. So you are using a total of 252 led watts for a 120. Your required wattage using a MH or T5 setup probably would have been more depending on the tank setup. Seems to me that less LED watts are required than MH or T5.

i acheive at least 250 par at 24 inches and 850 par at 4 inches of water with lamps 6 inches above water. you will need 100lumen + cree 3w leds or equivilant spaced 3-4 inches apart through 40-60 degree lenses. through my studies i have concluded that one would need 3/4 - 1 led per gallon for soft corals and some LPS placed higher in the tank. one would need 1-2 leds per gallon for full blown sps. (if that is your only lighting) i still think MH should remain primary and add leds for supplement.
my 54 watts of 18 LEDs outputs 3 times the par and lumens of one 96w CF and about 1/2 the par of my 150w MH.
