Before doing a lot of research my stock list contained 3 Tangs but I soon found out that was a bad idea....so here is my revised list:
2 False Percs
1 Yellow Watchmen Goby
1 Sailfin Tang (getting a 1"-1.5" one from LFS & plan on upgrading tank in 1-2 years)
1 Longnose or Flame Hawk
1 Fridmani Dottyback
1 Blenny (Scooter, Canary or Fangblenny)
Let me know what you think. I have flow of about 1500 GPH, 90 lbs of LR & 50 lbs of Live Sand. T5 HO Lighting with a few soft corals. My clean up crew consists of 15 Hermits, 5 Emeralds, 6 Peppermints, 10 snails & 1 brittle starfish. Also have a Pink Tip Haitian Anemone but I am considering returning that to the LFS.

IMO you are going to have to keep an eye on the hawkish and your ornamental shrimp

+1. Generally if they're big enough it isn't a problem, but there is still a good chance.
Honestly I'd just wait until you had the bigger thank for the tang. Smaller tangs sometimes have a harder time adjusting and have a higher mortality rate.

+1 I have a Falco Hawk and he has a shrimp dinner every time I try to add a pepperment shrimp(even tried to add a few at a time) I do have a coral band shrimp in that tank but it's pretty big.

A sailfin like all tangs need alot of swimming room a 55 even if it's small now it won't stay that way for long. You might want to wait on your upgrade for this fish.

As stated above...I don't know about he hawkfish with the shrimp. I have a spotted hawkfish and the shrimp we've tried were shredded. I really like him though, I'd rather have him than the shrimp probably, he's ver personable:) As for the blenny I don't know about a scooter unless you have a refugium. They eat copepods, a refugium will give them a safe place to breed. I have a midas blenny and reeeally like him. + 1 on waiting for the upgrade. I did the same thing...bought a baby hippo tang and he didn't last long.

Would a Flame Angel be a better choice than a tang?? Someone once told me that Angel's are not safe with coral's so that is why I have not considered one.

Everyones gonna tell you its animal cruelty to put a tang in a 55 gallon and they need at least feet of swimming room. Ive also read its hit or miss with the Flame Angel and reef. some will eat coral some wont. My own thoughts on it if I feed him enough and keep him full maybe he wont nip at corals? IDK just my guesses.

Added my 4th fish last night, a Lawnmower Blenny. I also have 2 Clowns & a yellow Watchmen. Still debating on whether I want to add a TAng or Flame Angel as well.

I don't recommend the hawkfish. It's going to eat your shrimp, and then move onto any crabs you have.
As for the sailfin tang issue. They grow fast. Almost all tangs do. I'd wait until you get a bigger tank. If you're looking to upgrade in 1-2 years, the tang is going to get too big before you do the upgrade. Just wait.
You most certainly can add a Flame Angel. It's always a risk adding an angelfish to a reef tank, but the large majority of people that do it, have no issues. If you decide to add the Flame Angel, make it the last fish you add to the 55G. My Coral Beauty is the boss of my tank. She pounces on every new addition and has put quite a few fish into cardiac arrest on me. It's not a pretty sight. Now that she's in a 155G, she's a little tamer, but still not great. I personally have never had an issue with her eating corals, but we keep her well fed. She does, however, occasionally nip at my sand sifting starfish and ate all of my feather dusters.
Once you upgrade you can have the sailfin and the flame angel, as well as one or two more tangs that you really wanted to begin with.
Good luck :)
