Thoughts on the Riptide Gyre

Any thoughts on this product?

  • Revolutionary Crossflow Technology
  • Virtually No Deadspots
    Evenly Distributed Flow
    Gyre Generating Flows
The Maxspect Riptide is the world's first "Gyre-Generator". Compared to traditional powerheads and wavemakers that are based on propeller nozzle flow technology, the Maxspect Riptide is based on advanced crossflow technology which produces massive horizontal water movement leaving little to no deadspots.

Honestly, I can't see any real advantage here over a cheap diy spray bar. Once you factor in the rock work inside a tank then what could it possibly achieve? If you still need to run power heads then it almost seems a tad pointless and if you're using it instead of power heads then I hope it comes with a powerful pump.
Is there any video on this thing yet?

I am curious to see it in action the more I look at it. The design looks essentially like an under water version of a blower fan similar to what you'd find on your furnace/air handler or carpet blower. Hard to tell though. They're teasing us apparently. :)

Honestly I have to say not impressed at all.....As Corey pointed out with rock work in the tank, that flow circular motion you see with the little balls or gallons would be minimal. That I can say for a fact. I did the same thing on my big tank as far as flow and positioning of the PH's and once you add rock you change the whole scheme of things. Besides look at the mere fact the whole point nowadays in most peoples perspective they want a clean looking display with no intrusive objects in the tank and that looks well......"ugly" from my perspective and again I'd bet depending on tank thickness you are still left trying to configure a way to mount the thing.

Agree and look at the skimpy magnet to mount the thing....

Yep, not to be negative but I don't see anything terribly impressive going on there either. Perhaps when the pricing and controlability come around I may take a second look. I like that they are thinking out of the box though. If nothing else I am kind of partial to the low profile design and wider coverage.

I'm not impressed. I think it looks ugly in the tank and I wouldn't want it in my tank.
