My purple tang is NUTS... He has cut his face almost everywhere.. He use to dart and then he stopped and now just in the past 2 days you darts everywhere... All levels are fine ammonia, nitrite, nitrate. No one is even infront of the aquarium when I'm at school. I only thing I can think of are the workers working and make loud sounds which today is the last day for them. My LFS says that his purple tang the his display tank use to do it and cut himself all the time but eventually stopped. anyone have any ideas.???

Workers making noise, explain. This may very well be the problem. Fish "dart" like you said when they are spooked. STEVE

Is the room dark when the tank lights are on? If it is this causes a reflection on the inside of the tank sometimes making fish think there is another tang intruding and they will dart around.

I was under the impression that fish only darted in an erratic manner when they were suffering with parasites.
Can listening to the the stereo (sometimes at high volume) be a big problem with fish and the "stress" issue?

Yes ,loud music will stress them out also. sound waves travel faster and farther through water than air. STEVE

When i was younger, I worked in a bar at a summer resort. The bar owner had a big reef tank with tangs and some other fish. I asked the question if the bands or the DJ 's music would harm the fish. It just happened that one of the bar tenders was a marine bioligist. He said they cant hear it, unless the sound is generated in the water. that is why they lfs doesnt want you to tap the glass.
The fish at the bar were healthy and very UNspooked.
If there is banging such as a wrecking ball, now that may have transmitted sound thru the base of the tank. So dont go hammering the door back on your stand lol j/k
Hope that helps some.

So your saying sound waves don't pass through glass or water. NEWS TO ME. Here's an experiment. Stand next to your tank, and yell. Then clap your hands. Maybe mine are the only "hearing fish ". If it's not the sound they are reacting to, Then surly it's the sudden and sharp vibrations.(sound waves) STEVE

I don't think fish have ears. I was waiting to see if someone else would catch on to that. They feel vibrations, and sence distance and direction this way. Do they hear? Probably not.but they are very sensitive to vibrations.....STEVE
