Hi there,
Well firstly I havent got a 'reef' as of yet, but will have its first coral in the next month or so, so in theory same restrictions, i.e. no copper etc.
I had a bout of Ick that would not go away, I set up a QT but I decided to let it cycle (which btw it has just finished
) but meanwhile had to get rid of ich for the fish. I have 1 yellow tang and 1 percula clown. After seeking advice on this board, i knew that QT was the best way but not an option, and most people on here do not trust reef-safe treatments 100%. In fairness, with good reason, there are many mickey-mouse ones out there. In light of this my LFS put me in contact with the head Marine Biologist of Kent Marine Europe. Very nice guy btw.
Anyway, this was what I did (you must have a skimmer for this to work) -
Day 1 - Add one dose of Kent's RX-P - this is organically based and contains peppers and chilli (sounds great huh?) which will irritate the fish's skin causing any ick that is on it to shed and die in the mucus.
Day 2 - The bottle says to do this for 10 days, which is not good for the fish. So on Day 2 add one dose of Poly-Ox which removes all of the material and mucus and contains freshwater plant extract which will soothe the fish and remove all dead ick.
Day 3 - Do nothing.
You may have to repeat this cycle twice (i did) to catch the Ick because you may miss it on first attempt. Some people on here might deny this, but all i can say is that it has worked for me with brilliant results, and was recommended by a leading Marine Biologist and is how they treat fish in aquariums.
All the best, hope this helps,
Tim.
