Timer question

Hi all, I have an Icecap 660 ballast, and have been looking into getting a timer for it. Everything I've seen that's made for it is very expensive. I'm wondering if it would be safe to use a regular old light timer from the hardware store, the kind you plug into the outlet, then plug the light into the timer???

That's what I got mine running on, my whites are on one timer and actinics on another. I got them at Home depot, they cost me about $7.00.

I also use the same timer, have 3 of them, I have my lights come on a different times. I have found that home depot has the best prices.

I use this electronic timer and it wrks great. It has wireless modules for each appliance and can be many feet away from the main unit.
