What amount of time do you suggest for leaving a saltwater tank on and what hours do you suggest. example 8-5 or 10-6

I am talking about my light on my fish tank. I need to cut back because I have been leaving the kights on for 12 hours and green algea is forming so I want to cut back to 8 or 9 hours. What do you think

Are you getting any ambient light from the room, or especially from outside? If so you want to factor that in as well. What some will do is start their lights later in the if the room is already sunlit and let the lights go more into the night. Another factor is your tank inhabitants. If you have corals, especially SPS you need a good 12 hours of light.

what setting do you have on the timer? Mine is on 7:30-6
