Tips for 36g Bowfront?

Hi everyone,
I currently have a 10g set up and running for around 8 months with about 20lbs of live rock and 10lbs of live sand. I have a peppermint shrimp and a 4 stripe damsel. This tank is just too small for me so I got a free 29g with a stand from a relative but then I found out that Petsmart had a 36g aqueon bowfront kit on sale for $120. It came with the tank, lid, flourescent light, junk filter, and 200w heater.
I already bought a Current Nova Extreme X2 T5HO 30" Light on the auction site and a Penguin 350 HOB filter that I am considering modding to add a small light and some chaeto/sand/rubble rock in the filter compartments.
At this point in time I don't really want spend the extra money to build a sump and this seems to be a good alternative for the time being.
In my 10g I didn't run a Protein Skimmer but I'd like to add one to this tank. I have read good things about the Octopus Needlewheel skimmers and found one for $98. Has anyone had experience with these skimmers? I have also been looking into the Aquac Remora Skimmers but they are a bit more money. I definitely want a quality skimmer but I am also on a budget... Any recommendations?
The heater that came with the kit is an All-Glass Aquariums brand 200w. Will this be ok or should I buy something else?
I plan on buying 20 more pounds (30lbs total) of the Bio-activ LS from my LFS and I found a local guy who is selling LR for $2.50 a pound from a stand he is breaking down so I plan to try and pick up around 20 more pounds of rock as well (40 lbs total). I am definitely planning on putting the peppermint shrimp in the new tank as well as my 5 Astrea snails, 1 Nassarius snail, and a few blue leg hermits. I might give the damsel to a relative because I'm afraid it might be territorial toward other fish... or will it be ok?
I'll be building the stand this weekend and I plan to possibly get the rock and sand as well so the tank could potentially be running this weekend. My biggest question is if it will be a problem if I just put the water from the 10g into the 36g and then mix the difference with new RO water to fill the tank the rest of the way. Will I need to essentially recycle the tank or will using the already established water pretty much eliminate the cycle? Either way it doesnt really matter, I just dont want to risk losing my livestock.
Sorry for the LOOOOOONNNNG post and any advice/tips/suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Justin

hey dude, instead of the penguin, look into purchasing, if you can find em used its even better, 2 aquaclear 110 hang on the back powerfilters, they are extremely easy to mod into a fuge, if you want, email me at chovuk1982@yahoo.com an ill link you to the sites ive found to help me with mine

I looked at them but they are $80 from what I found and I could almost build a DIY sump for that price. I'm emailing you now

I found a new one on the auction site I might try to get... I am going to keep looking around for some cheaper ones.
I got my light today and it fits perfect with the lid that came with the tank so I won't have to buy a glass one. My next purchase is going to be a protein skimmer, not sure exactly what I want to do about that yet though

I've been reading about the Reef Octopus Needle Wheels skimmers and the Remoras just curious if anyone has experience with both or if there is something even better in the same price range

Octopus BH-100SS Skimmer = Hang On Back Skimmer
reef octopus needle wheel 110 = In sump use only

Yeah the 110 is in sump only... Does the surface skimmer make a difference?
Either way, I'm pretty sure I'm going with either the BH-100 or the BH-100SS, only difference is the SS has the surface skimmer for $9 more ($98 vs. $107)
Any thoughts about the water issue? It doesn't really matter if I have to recycle the tank, I will just have to move some furniture around to be able to keep both tanks set up until the 36g cycles and I can add the contents of the 10g... the main thing is that I don't want to end up losing my shrimp and damsel... I'm sure someone out there has done what I want to do and can give some insight...

Well I ran into a slight snag, the Penguin 350 and AquaClear 110 are both too long to fit on the tank and not hit the center brace.

well, I'm making progress with this.
I bought a CPR Bak-Pak 2 HOB Skimmer and a K2 powerhead on the auction site for $106.95 (lightly used). Then I came across an AquaC Remora Skimmer with the drain fitting and a Maxi-Jet 1200 pump and the noise mod for $130 (also used). I'm probably going to just resell the CPR skimmer. Then today I met a local guy and bought an Oceanic Reef Ready Model 2 Sump that was missing some parts for $40 that I'm going to resell.
I also went to my LFS and bought 40# of sand and oceanvisions black background. I should also be getting the refractometer I bought of the auction site the other day.
Tomorrow I'm planning on building my stand to get this thing running.
