To clean or not to clean?

I've heard varied opinions on cleaning the back glass. I'm interested in who does and who doesn't. I get the feeling it's more cosmetic than anything for those who like to keep it clean -but would be interested in hearing your opinions.
Thanks!

I have beautiful corraline algae on both the sides and back of my corner tank. Don't go crazy it looks really great...

I suspect everyone means corraline algae, not the ugly types of brown/green algae...

Seriously, I have never cleaned the back glass. Alot of my rock is touching it so it would be an excersise in futility anyway.

First the green/pruple color does make a nice backdrop.
Second the algae in the back glass is helping the tank
Third, it is hard to clean the back.
Finally, why fight it?

i never knew it was healthy to let it collect like that. plus, it just seems really ugly. i let the redish/purplish stuff stay but the green stuff too???
i will admit though...it's a pain to clean. especially when you're doin it drunk and you knock over your live rock & corals like an idiot :jumping:

 Maybe I'm reading the replies wrong, but I don't think anyone is advocating allowing the nasty green algae to grow on the back glass.
And alcohol + aquariums = recipe for disaster
