hey i have been researching the idea of making base rock using. portland white cement type 1 or 3 (10$)-rock salt(8$)-and crushed oyster shells (21$) after its made i have to wait for it to cure( can take awhile). upon researching i notice the rock is extremely porus. my question is would it be better to simply buy base rock from LFS or where ever i can find it or make it myself??? in total i would like to make/buy 50lb of rock for my tank. Any suggestions ?

better to buy base rock.
the cement takes 6+ months to cure with daily water changes.. acid baths are necessary.
if you are purely doing it for the money, you may look into a cheaper hobby. however, if you are doing it for the creativity, buy and cure some marcorocks and buy their filler cement to put them together.
or you could just buy their cement and mix it with sand and oyster shells and model your own rocks. their cement doesnt have the ingredient in it that causes pH swings that portland cement does.
